Today is EARTH DAY! Last year I had a bit of a countdown of products, but wasn’t quite as organized this year so instead I wanted to feature a Canadian, all natural, vegan brand that I just recently discovered through blogger friend She’s So Eco. Natural makeup can be hit or miss as formulations that are natural AND provide pigment and texture we all love is tough. Elate Clean Cosmetics is based in BC’s capital city of Victoria whose products immediately caught my eye with their West Coast wooden accents and ethereal, yet naturally beautiful looks that were being created. You can imagine how “elated” I was when I reached out to Elate and they agreed to work with me on a makeup look for Earth Day!
I knew there was something odd about the packaging for the eyeshadows and I was right! I just wish they came with instructions on how to plant this “seed paper” because as much as I love green beauty, I have nothing near a green thumb. In fact, it’s probably black for death!
I love the Bamboo EyeColour Compact*($8.00 CDN)! You can see the little magnets at the bottom to hold three pressed eyeshadows of your choice. There is also a mirror as well as a little slot for a small travel sized eyeshadow brush. The eyeshadows come with minimal packaging so that all you have to do is place it in the holder.
I received the Pressed Eye Colour shades Modish*, a plum with shimmer, Lithe*, a shimmery neutral gold and Rave*($16.00 CDN/3g each), a shimmery purple. These pressed eyeshadows are made using mineral pigments and bamboo stem extract which are then pressed with organic jojoba oil. The pigmentation of these was quite good with Rave being not quite as pigmented as I had hoped, but definitely buildable. I am in love with Modish and Lithe though. Gah! They’re so pretty!
The Moisturizing Lip Glosses ($16.00 CDN) come in a total of 6 shades and are made with organic coconut oil and peppermint essential oil for a slight cooling feeling. I received the shade “Charm”*, a cool-toned medium rose, that almost looked copper on my skin tone.
This was actually one of my favourite products! The Universal Creme for Cheeks and Lips in Elation ($20.00/10g) was smooth and relatively hydrating on the lips while providing a gorgeous wash of cool plum colour to both the lips and cheeks. You can see that the way the container is shaped allows for direct application to cheeks and lips, but I preferred applying the colour with my fingers for more control.
GET THE LOOK!
Face:
Evelyn Iona Organic Perfecting Primer
L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation in #103 Natural Buff*
Brows:
IT Cosmetics Brow Powder Universal Brow Pencil
Eyes:
Apply Mary Kay Eye Primer all over the lid followed by Elate Pressed Eye Colour in Lithe* all over the lid up to the brow bone. In patting motions, use a small brush and apply Elate Pressed Eye Colour in Modish* on the outer third of lid. Use a fluffy brush to blend Lithe and Modish and pull Modish up into crease. Using a smudgebrush, take Elate Pressed Eye Colour in Rave* and line lower lash line in patting motions to reduce fallout. Highlight inner eye corners with Lithe.
Line the lower waterline with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Ransom and upper lash line with Pacifica Eyeliner in Fringe.
Apply Pandora’s Makeup Box Mascara in Black*.
Cheeks:
Elate Universal Creme in Elation* applied in patting motions with fingers and blending. You can apply directly as it is in stick format, but I like having more control over colour concentration using my fingers.
Lips:
Prime lips with Pandora’s Makeup Box Butter My Lips* and then apply a thin layer of Elate Universal Creme in Elation*. For a more natural look, you can stop here, but I chose to layer Elate Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Charm* over top for some added colour and natural peppermint essential oil tingliness.
Final Verdict: I am SO HAPPY that I got a chance to try out this wonderful makeup line because all of these are products that I would use regularly. I just used the Universal Creme today on my cheeks and the eye shadow shade Lithe! I love the ingredients as well as supporting a local business. The only thing that tends to worry me with more natural makeup is the shelf life as there are often little to no preservatives inside. I suppose this is all the more reason to use the products instead of hoarding them away for years!
Anyway, please DO check out Elate Clean Cosmetics because I know that I will now HAVE to pick up their Vibrant Lipstick when it comes back in stock!
