I don't know how you guys feel about Avon, but lemme tell ya, it has definitely changed since I was a little girl. With the introduction of Avon's mark. line, I have definitely been paying a lot more attention to Avon because there are a TON of cute makeup products, accessories and shoes (I have two pairs and a bag)! Makeup will be the theme for today though as I recently received the On The Dot Matte Eye Color Compact ($18.00 CDN) to try. Matte shadows are next to impossible for me to decipher at times. If there is no glitter I'm totally lost. It's like I have a derivative of colour blindness, but with glitter.
The plastic compact fits comfortably in the palm of my child-size hand and contain nine matte eyeshadows along with a small dual-ended applicator brush.
The swatches were a bit of a mixed bag with some shades applying evenly and with high intensity while others very tough to coax colour from. Mattes tend to have a chalky consistency and whether it is the nature of the finish or the quality of the shadows I am not sure. I don't have enough experience with mattes to be a good judge. The darkest shades seemed to perform better than the lighter shades so it looks to be colour-related.
The other thing I found challenging about this palette was the size of the eyeshadow pans themselves as they were quite small. Smaller than a dime, I could not comfortably use my fingers and had to use pointed brushes.
Despite my initial struggles, I was determined to make this palette work for me as I was heading out that day so I chose two shades that I wouldn't normally pair together and tried to create a colourful smokey eye with a bright lip. Read on to find out how I did!
Face:
Lancome Teint Miracle Foundation in #03
Brows:
Dior Diorshow Brow Styler in Universal Dark Brown*
Avon Perfect Brow Gel in Dark Brown*
Eyes:
Apply your favourite eye primer. Some of these shades were a bit patchy, but primer will help intensify the colour.
Apply the lightest nude shade from the On the Dot Matte Eye Color Compact* all over the lid.
Apply the purple eyeshadow in the top left corner on 2/3 of the eyelid.
With a light hand, apply the dark teal to the outer corners of the eyelid and smoke out.
Line lower waterline with Avon Glimmersticks Liqui-glide in Jade* and smudge with smudge brush.
Line upper lash line with a black liquid liner like Avon Super Extend Precise Liquid Eye Liner in Black*.
Apply Avon Big False Lashes Volume Mascara*.
Cheeks:
Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Your Love is King
Lips:
Avon True Color Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Hot Plum* (SOOOO GOOOOOD!)
Final verdict: Though I was happy with the final look, I am just not a matte shadow person. The only mattes I have are neutrals and though I really liked the dark teal in this palette, the size of the pans did not jive well with me.
